What is an MRI Used For?

An MRI scan is used to diagnose a variety of conditions by producing detailed images of the body's internal structures. Common uses include examining the brain and spinal cord, joints, heart, and blood vessels, as well as detecting tumors and other abnormalities. This advanced imaging tool helps physicians plan appropriate treatments and monitor the progress of certain conditions.

Preparing for Your MRI

Before your MRI appointment at Point of View Imaging, there are a few important steps to take. First, you'll need to complete a questionnaire about your medical history and any potential contraindications for MRI, such as implanted medical devices. It's essential to inform our team about any metal implants or pacemakers you might have.

In terms of attire, you will be asked to wear a gown provided by our facility. It's advisable to leave jewelry and other metal accessories at home to avoid any interference with the magnetic field during the scan.

The MRI Procedure

Upon arrival, our friendly staff will guide you through the process. You will lie on a motorized table that slides into the MRI machine, which is a large tube-shaped magnet. The procedure is painless, but you may hear loud tapping or thumping noises during the scan. Earplugs or headphones will be provided for your comfort.

The duration of the scan can vary depending on the area being examined, typically ranging from 15 minutes to an hour. It’s important to remain still to ensure clear images are captured.

During and After the Scan

While inside the MRI machine, you will be able to communicate with the technician via an intercom system. You might also be given a contrast dye injection to enhance the clarity of the images for certain types of scans. This will be discussed with you beforehand if needed.

After your MRI is completed, there is no recovery time needed. You can return to your daily activities immediately unless otherwise instructed by your healthcare provider. The images obtained during the scan will be reviewed by a radiologist, and a report will be sent to your referring physician.

Understanding Your Results

Your doctor will discuss the results with you during a follow-up appointment. It's important to understand that an MRI is just one piece of your diagnostic puzzle. The findings will be combined with other tests and examinations to form a comprehensive view of your health condition.

At Point of View Imaging, we strive to make your MRI experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible. If you have further questions or concerns about your upcoming scan, please don't hesitate to reach out to our team for more information.
